San Carlos has the best of two worlds: the sea and the mountains. It is located in the state of Sonora on the Sea of Cortez. On one side, it is surrounded by a scenic desert landscape and the spectacular twin peaks of Cerro Tetakawi. On the other, it looks out to sea. Once a target for raiding sea pirates and later a large cattle ranch, it wasn’t until the middle of the 20th century that developer Rafael T. Cabellero purchased the land and turned it into a tourist’s paradise.
Famous for its diving community, sport fishing and delicious seafood, San Carlos receives a large influx of visitors from the U.S. and Canada during the winter months, when the snowbirds partake in the myriad of aquatic activities and enjoy tranquil days at the spa.
The San Carlos area has a number of quality resorts and hotels, like the 5-star San Carlos Plaza Resort & Convention Center, with 173 rooms facing the ocean, restaurants, bars, and meeting space perfect for banquets, weddings, conventions, or parties. San Carlos has some of Mexico´s top golf courses, including the San Carlos Golf and Country Club with its18-hole par-72 championship golf course designed by Roy Dye, with an impressive view of the mountains and ocean. The country club includes lovely outdoor patios and restaurants and an Olympic size swimming pool.
Just a 15-mile drive away is Guaymas International Airport, that receives flights from Phoenix, Loreto, and San Jose del Cabo. San Carlos is a 4-hour drive from Nogales, Arizona, thanks to the four-lane divided Mexico Highway 15.
